So last night I had a dream which took on the format of a Boing Boing article about laptops. Not a dream about reading it, my dream was this article. The words kept changing around but it was all making sense. I need a vacation.
“Wouldst thou have men speak good of thee? speak good of them. And when thou hast learned to speak good of them, try to do good unto them, and thus thou wilt reap in return their speaking good of thee.”—Epictetus regarding tumblr anon asks
The occupy movement and Kony 2012 are exciting even if you aren’t excited about them individually. They represent significant first attempts at using what the internet has become to bring about real social change. Even if they fail, they are helping form a path leading social media away from commercialism and towards something much more natural. I think it’s natural that technology which brings together people will ultimately serve to benefit the people. It’s kind of awkward right now, people are still getting used to this sort of connection, but that’s quickly changing.
I just get so excited thinking about what a catalyst technology and the internet can be for social justice. Sure the Kony thing is sort of off and the occupy movement was sort of silly but this is just the beginning. Look at Wikileaks. It triggered a chain reaction of revolution in the middle east and beyond that has served a tremendous service to freedom. We are more comfortable here, things are harder to move around, but the time will come when projects like occupy and Kony will be seen as forerunners in something we can’t even imagine yet. Who knows, maybe we’ll all get together and just give Harper the boot. An internet fueled impeachment, now that would be exciting!
